On April 4th, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) published, K-12 Education: Discipline Disparities for Black Students, Boys, and Students with Disabilities. This study of schools nationwide during the 2013-14 school year found continued disproportionality in how different groups of students are disciplined regardless of the type of disciplinary action, level of school poverty, or type of public school attended.
This Webinar will describe the science-to-practice characteristics of a school discipline model that is evidence-based (through SAMHSA) and has been implemented in thousands of schools nationwide. In contrast to the PBIS framework with its significant flaws, and the SEL framework that does not effectively address students with social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges, the Project ACHIEVE (www.projectachieve.net) approaches presented have demonstrated definitive outcomes from preschool through high school—including in alternative school and residential settings.
Especially discussed will be the Behavioral Matrix and Classroom Accountability system that gives teachers and students a “behavioral roadmap” that increases prosocial behavior, decreases disruptive behavior, and directly addresses disproportionate disciplinary referrals by teachers and need-for-action by administrators.
